It does not serve any other function, but emits light like other glowstone based blocks do too. when you put in 2 glowstone and 2 platinum ingot you get 1 glowstone ingot when you put in 10 glowstone and 10 platinum ingot you get 9 glowstone ingot if you put in more then 1 item, you always get back one les then you put it.
